Mark Hazlewood

I've spent the past decade solving one problem: how do you make developer platforms more usable?

After seven years as a software engineer and earning a degree in Human-Computer Interaction, I moved into product design. For the past 9+ years I've been leading the design of an enterprise platform used by thousands of developers every day. That's the background I bring to every client of MarkedUp.

Most people doing DevEx work came up through one path, either engineering or design. The gap between those two perspectives is where many bad platform decisions start. An engineer evaluating an API tends to accept the cognitive overhead as unavoidable. A designer evaluating it can't always tell what's genuinely broken versus just unfamiliar.

When I evaluate your platform, I use it the way a developer would: building a real solution, by hand and with AI agents, hitting your error states, and combing through the docs when I get stuck. Then I synthesize what I find the way a UX researcher would.
